Norway’s foreign minister has called for Nordic countries to be given a joint seat in the Group of 20 big economies and warned that the body was yet to secure its international legitimacy.

The comments highlighted mounting unease among several non-member countries as the G20 establishes itself as arguably the most important multilateral forum of the post-financial crisis era.

Jonas Gahr Støre proposed that members of the Nordic Council – Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland – could share a rotating seat together with the Baltic states and possibly Poland.

There could be similar arrangements for other under-represented groups, such as African and Arab countries, he added.

“My message is that we should engage in a debate over the legitimacy and representation of the G20,” he told the Financial Times in an interview.
