Javelin: Thorkildsen wins in Rome

Norway’s two-time Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen, from Kristiansand, Norway won the javelin event at Rome’s Golden Gala on Friday with a final throw of 87.46m. Finnish world champion Tero Pitkamaki came second.

Pitkamaki had led the competition from the start with his first throw of 83.68m.

Thorkildsen (27), who has been hampered by a pulled groin muscle so far this season, said he still could feel the injured muscle, but that it was now much better.

However, he said that the injury had prevented him from acquiring the stability he wanted.
